Stranraer Sports Town Proposal

This is an open proposal to the Community of Stranraer and South West Scotland, to help make Stranraer into a Sports Town.

Stranraer Sports Town Proposal:

By Alastair Campbell (GallowayNightSky.co.uk)

What a wonderful area we live in, with seas so blue and mountains that reach the sky. We have a fantastic opportunity as a community to change how Stranraer will be in the 21st Century.

I understand that change is hard sometimes, and that is what makes history, history. We can not change the past, but we can change the future. It is in all our hands to stand and make a count of how we see ourselves and how others will view us. We need to plan for the future, and our children's future.

We live in a world, over run by computers and emails and mobile phone systems of every type. Don't let us fight against this information overload, but let us use this media to help promote Stranraer and that of South West Scotland.

As a community, we need to be more proactive and take control of situations, or we will find that we have missed an opportunity to build something and we missed our chance. There is an old Scottish saying, Whits fur ye,'ll no go by ye. All I would ask is that the community look at ways Stranraer can build for the future and that we as a community can grow together for a brighter future.

The History of Stranraer:

Stranraer became a burgh of barony in 1596 and a royal burgh in 1617. By 1600, it had become the market town for western Wigtownshire. At about this time Stranraer was reached by a military road built from Dumfries to allow easier access to Portpatrick for transportation to Ireland.

The first harbour in Stranraer was built in the mid 1700s, with further port development in the 1820s. The arrival of the railway from Dumfries in 1861 finally established Stranraer as the area's main port. In 1862, the line was extended to serve the harbour directly, and a link to Portpatrick was also opened. Some time later, a rail connection north to Girvan was established.

Stranraer remained the main Scottish port for the Irish ferries for the next 150 years or so. Stena's intention to leave Stranraer was first signalled in February 2003. It will transfer to a new base nearer the mouth of Loch Ryan to cut journey times and reduce costs.

The company said jobs would be created during the construction phase and ferry jobs safeguarded. The ferry port move will also allow a master plan for the wider regeneration of the waterfront area of Stranraer to proceed.

First Minister Alex Salmond and Stena Line chairman, Dan Sten Olsson, made the investment announcement in Edinburgh.

Sport tourism strategy, is the combination of the following,

using the sports tourism intensity hierarchy.

Intensity of sporting focus will be on

Spectator sports tourism

Participation sports tourism

When looking at events, the definition of participation tourism takes in visitors who are

there to support the competitors

the coaches, family and friends

or the functioning of
the event e.g. officials and media personnel.

Recreational tourist

Incidental sports tourism

Incidental tourism which may not have as intense a sporting focus as the other three, but clearly has a value in its own right.

And Travel packages

When looking at the benefits either by contributing to a wider programme of regeneration.

We need to plan for the future, and our children's future.

Questions?

Financial development of the proposal?

What would be the implications on the residents of Stranraer after designating Stranraer as a sports town?

I think the proposal for Stranraer becoming "Sports Town of Dumfries and Galloway' is a great idea. The area has so much to offer and is in a magnificent part of the country. Every other week, notices and banners appear for Half Marathons, 10kms Road Race, Triathlon, The Big Abseil off the End of Scotland and many other sporting challenges. Stranraer needs a big boost and this could be it. - Mavis Paterson.
